I am an independent photographer, writer and sometimes educator in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
I was a 2023-2024 Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan.
Most importantly for me these days, I am a husband and a father, and anything on this website comes after that.

Since 2004 I have maintained a practice that is expansive and experimental, but with documentary photography at the core of everything I do. For most of my working career my interests have been twofold. I document and interpret landscapes with recent histories of notable human interventions like contamination, extraction or development. I also practice a more traditional sort of documentary portraiture with a broad interest in showing people who may not otherwise seek to show themselves.

As of 2021, my projects are mostly concerned with the Great Lakes region, especially my adopted home state of Michigan.

My project work has been featured in National Geographic, Time, The New Yorker, Phaidon and other publications. I have worked on an assignment basis for publications like The New York Times, The Guardian, and Bloomberg Businessweek, and worked commercially work for Herman Miller, Nike and others. I also exhibit work and have shown in the Catherine Edelman Gallery and the Ackland Museum of Art. My books are held in collections at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of North Carolina and others.

Outside of my projects, I have worked to found Sleeper.Studio, and Basement Art Space. I have lectured on photography and photojournalism at The University of North Carolina, Chapel-Hill and Ohio University.
